This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 position for the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately one year from the appointment begin date.

The position will assist with research in the Economic Entomology Program in the Horticulture Department at Oregon State University (OSU). Execution will be conducted in coordination with Vaughn Walton and other research leaders within the lab.

Key Responsibilities

60% Trial execution

Assist with conducting research experiments for research leaders in Walton Lab
  • Help research leaders with marking sites/blocks where field experiments will take place.
  • Flag the blocks/sites.
  • Make notes and diagrams of the research sites.
  • Collect samples weekly.
  • (Samples include live or dead insects, blueberries, hazelnuts, and blackberries)
  • Look through the samples.
  • Gather data.
  • Enter data in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
  • Create data sheet in Microsoft Excel.
  • Make necessary arenas for laboratory experiments.
  • (Cutting containers and gluing mesh onto surfaces)
  • Purchase necessary materials from Chem Store.
  • Make required insect trapping solutions (sugar-yeast solution).

40% Insect colony, laboratory, and field maintenance

Assist with rearing insect colony.
  • Insect species include Spotted wing drosphila, stink bug, filbertworm, and mealybug.
  • Rearing must be done three times per week (rearing includes changing food and water for insects as well as keeping the bug dorms clean)
  • Buying ingredients to make insect-food diet from Co-Op

Laboratory Maintenance.
  • Organize the laboratory and storages (putting materials in the correct storage areas)
  • Doing dishes to keep the sinks and freezer free of dirty/used samples.
  • Keep the floor of the laboratory clean by sweeping and mopping.
  • Recycle boxes and plastics.
  • Discard any old, dirty samples in the walk-in cold rooms.
  • Keep up with maintenance of Motor Pool vehicles.
  • (Notifying the research leaders of issues in the car and taking it to the Auto shop/Motor Pool for repair)
  • Ship samples to other research institutes for testing.
  • (Genetics and insecticide residue testing)
  • Chemical inventory

Field Maintenance.
  • Check on the status of crops at Lewis Brown
  • (Crops include blueberries, hazelnuts, and cherries)
  • Plant trees if needed.
  • Irrigate trees when more irrigation is needed.
  • Check irrigation pipes weekly basis.
  • Mow the grass.
  • Weeding.
  • Spread sawdust in the blueberry rows.
  • Flailing the rows of cherry and hazelnut blocks.
  • Notify any issues in the crops at Lewis Brown to research leaders.

The employee will operate motor vehicle to research sites. Possible exposure to chemicals in laboratory and field.

Collaborate respectfully with research leaders and peers from diverse backgrounds during data collection and experimental setup.

Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Minimum Qualifications
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • The worker may be required to work up to an approximate 40 hours per week.
  • Field work is conducted during summer and winter. Temperature during fieldwork can range anywhere between 0-100+ degrees F.
  • The employee will operate motor vehicle to research sites
  • Lift heavy boxes of samples/materials
  • Set up cages over the blueberry bushes for trials
